Dandruff is a common scalp condition characterized by the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. It is often accompanied by itching and flaking of the scalp. The exact cause of dandruff is not fully understood, but several factors can contribute to its development, including an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia, excessive oil production on the scalp, dry skin, sensitivity to hair care products, and certain medical conditions. Dandruff can be managed and controlled with proper scalp care. This may include regular shampooing with anti-dandruff shampoos that contain active ingredients such as zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, or salicylic acid. Gently massaging the scalp during shampooing can also help remove dead skin cells. Additionally, maintaining good scalp hygiene, avoiding harsh hair products, and managing stress levels can help prevent or minimize dandruff. If over-the-counter treatments do not provide relief or if the condition worsens, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist for further evaluation and appropriate treatment options.
