Overview
What is Carbon Peel and who is it for?
In a carbon peel, a thin coat of medical-grade carbon lotion is spread over the face and allowed to dry. The carbon particles settle into pores and bind to oil and dead skin. A Q-switched laser is then passed over the face. The laser energy is absorbed by the dark carbon, which heats and breaks apart, taking surface debris, oil and dead cells with it. The same energy gently warms the skin below, which can help with tone and texture.
The treatment feels like light snapping or warmth, and most people go back to their day straight afterwards. Skin often looks clearer and more even right away, which is why some people book it before an event. It is not a chemical peel, despite the name. There is no acid involved and usually no visible peeling, only a smoother feel to the skin over the next day or two.
A carbon peel is most useful for oily skin, enlarged-looking pores, blackheads and dullness. It can also help mild acne as part of a wider plan, but it is not a treatment for deep scars or heavy pigmentation on its own. A short course usually gives better and longer-lasting results than one session. Dr. Shilpa may pair it with prescription creams, a medifacial or other treatments when your concerns need more than one approach.
The procedure
What happens during the treatment?
- 1
Skin check
Dr. Shilpa examines your skin, notes any active acne or pigmentation, and confirms the carbon peel suits your concerns and skin type.
- 2
Carbon application
Your face is cleansed and a thin layer of carbon lotion is applied and left to dry for a few minutes. Protective eyewear is put on.
- 3
Laser passes
The laser is passed over the face, breaking up the carbon layer. You hear a snapping sound and feel mild warmth or prickling.
- 4
Cleanse and protect
Remaining carbon is wiped away, then a soothing moisturiser and sunscreen are applied. Mild pinkness fades within an hour or two.

Frequently asked questions
Most people find it comfortable. You will feel light snapping, like small flicks, and some warmth as the laser breaks up the carbon. No numbing cream is usually needed. If any area feels too warm, the settings can be adjusted during the session.
