Laser · Fractional CO2 Laser

Resurface rough, scarred skin and rebuild collagen from within

Fractional CO2 laser is one of the more powerful options for scars, deep pores and fine lines. It removes microscopic columns of old skin and triggers fresh collagen as you heal. Because it works deeper, it needs proper planning, and Dr. Shilpa R K adjusts every setting to your skin type and goals.

  • Acne and chickenpox scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Open pores
  • Rough, uneven texture

Overview

What is Fractional CO2 Laser and who is it for?

The CO2 laser is an ablative laser, which means it vaporises a thin layer of skin. In fractional mode, it does this in a pattern of tiny dots rather than across the whole surface. The untreated skin between the dots acts as a reservoir for healing, so recovery is faster than with older full-surface CO2 resurfacing, while the deeper heat still drives strong collagen remodelling.

It is commonly used for depressed acne scars, chickenpox scars, enlarged pores, fine lines around the eyes and mouth, and some raised growths. Results build slowly. You may see smoother skin a few weeks after healing, but collagen continues to form for three to six months, so the full effect of each session takes time to show and is judged a few months later.

On Indian skin, the main concern is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a temporary darkening that can appear a few weeks after treatment. Dr. Shilpa lowers this risk by priming the skin beforehand, using lower density and appropriate energy, and insisting on strict sun protection. Darkening, if it happens, usually fades with creams, but it is a real possibility that you should know about before starting.

The procedure

What happens during the treatment?

  1. 1

    Consultation

Dr. Shilpa examines your skin, discusses downtime, checks for cold sores, infections and medicines, and may advise skin priming.

  2. 2

    Numbing

The area is cleansed and a numbing cream is applied for 45-60 minutes to make the procedure comfortable.

  3. 3

    Laser resurfacing

With eye shields in place, the laser is passed over the area. You will feel heat and a pricking sensation, and may hear a light snapping sound.

  4. 4

    Post-procedure care

A soothing ointment is applied. You go home the same day with written aftercare instructions and a follow-up date.

Benefits

What are the benefits?

  • Treats deeper scars and texture than most gentler lasers.
  • Stimulates long-lasting collagen remodelling in the treated skin.
  • Helps tighten the look of enlarged pores and fine lines.
  • Can treat scars from acne, chickenpox, injury or surgery.
  • Depth and density can be adjusted for darker skin types.

Is it right for you?

Fractional CO2 suits adults with scars, coarse texture or fine lines who can plan for about a week of visible healing. It is not advised during pregnancy, with active infection or acne, a tendency to keloids, or recent isotretinoin use. If you get cold sores, an antiviral medicine may be given beforehand.

Aftercare

How should you care for your skin afterwards?

  • 01Apply the prescribed ointment and keep the skin moist while it heals.
  • 02Wash gently with plain water or a mild cleanser; do not rub.
  • 03Let flakes and crusts fall off naturally; do not peel them.
  • 04Stay out of the sun and use sunscreen once the skin has closed.
  • 05Avoid makeup, swimming and workouts until the doctor allows.
  • 06Restart retinoids or acids only when Dr. Shilpa advises.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Expect your skin to look red and slightly swollen for 2-3 days, followed by fine brown crusting and peeling that settles in about 5 to 7 days. Some pinkness may last a little longer. Most people plan the session before a weekend or a few days of working from home.
