Overview
What is Scalp Micropigmentation and who is it for?
Scalp micropigmentation is a cosmetic tattooing technique designed for the scalp. Using a fine needle, specially formulated pigment is placed in the upper layers of the skin as tiny dots. When done well, these dots mimic the look of hair follicles or very short stubble. The shade and dot size are matched to your hair colour and skin tone. No surgery is involved.
SMP is useful in a few situations. Men with advanced balding who prefer a shaved look can have a defined hairline recreated. Men and women with diffuse thinning can have pigment placed between existing hairs, which reduces how much scalp shows through. It can also camouflage scars, including linear scars from older hair transplant surgery, and some stable patches of hair loss.
It is important to understand that SMP is camouflage. It does not stop hair loss or grow new hair, so it is often combined with medical treatment. The pigment fades slowly over the years and usually needs a touch-up. The shade also needs careful planning so it still looks right as your remaining hair greys over time. Dr. Shilpa will help you decide whether it fits your goals.
The procedure
What happens during the treatment?
- 1
Consultation and design
Your hair loss, skin tone and goals are assessed. The hairline shape, shade and density are planned and marked with you.
- 2
Preparing the scalp
The area is cleaned and a numbing cream may be applied to make the session more comfortable.
- 3
Pigment placement
Fine dots of pigment are placed in layers across the planned area. A session can take 2-4 hours depending on the size.
- 4
Building density
Further sessions, usually 2-3 weeks apart, add depth and refine the shade so the result looks natural.

Is it right for you?
SMP suits men and women with diffuse thinning, advanced balding, alopecia scars or transplant scars who want a visual improvement without surgery. It is not ideal if your hair loss is changing quickly, if you have active scalp conditions such as psoriasis flares, or if you tend to form keloids. Dr. Shilpa will review your scalp before planning.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
SMP is long lasting but not permanent. The pigment slowly fades with time, sun exposure and the skin's natural renewal. Most people need a touch-up every few years to keep it looking fresh. How quickly it fades depends on your skin type and how well you protect your scalp from the sun.
